How to Bake a Pie in 10 Steps or Less

Synopsis

I wrote this play while transitioning in order to release a lot of pent-up and dizzying emotions. I craved a fairy tale narrative that made this journey easier to complete because…let me tell you… jumping through medical hoop after legal hoop gets exhausting! Sometimes you wish you could just lie down and magically wake up as your authentic self. Wouldn’t that be just neat.

But alas, life doesn’t work that way, which is why it’s all the more important to create a fairy tale that the trans, and the queer community at large, can hold onto. This work is for all of us who have struggled to find ourselves in a world that fiercely denies us the chance. It is a testament to the strength we share, to the literal and figurative wounds that heal, and to the ties that bind.

-Dan Vena, Playwright
